Pila Canale:

Pila Canale is located 400 meters above the valley of the “Taravo" in the canton of St. Mary Siché.
The village is built on slopes and is located 30 km from Propriano and 35 km from Ajaccio.

Pila Canale Today:

This pretty village of 290 inhabitants has maintained a certain dynamic as can be demonstrated by the school and the police station which are still present.
The village has an association which offers various activities such as a library, themed nights depending on the season and even an online newspaper, Voci Paese, to keep the nostalgic villagers informed of their village.

At the entrance of the village, two menhirs found on the site forty years ago will welcome you.
Did they come from a megalithic site deep down in the valley?

 Pila Canale:

A little bit of History:

Meaning of the name:
Pila would mean a pile (as in a pile of hay/ hay bale) and Canale a channel.

The church, built on a leveled plane between the two areas mentioned above, which are now known as Pila Canale, has created unity in the village today.
In July 1851,  Casanelli Istria, the bishop of Ajaccio, came to celebrate the general peace between Pila and Canale, which put an end to more than half a century of enmity.
The church was then demolished but the stones and framework were put aside for the construction of a new church. In October 1888, upon its completion, the church was consecrated by Bishop of La Foata.

Today, the St Pancras church has furnishings from the 17th century, its tabernacle (which was restored 25 years ago), the sacristy furniture and a particularly beautiful cross pathway from the 19 century.

The olive trees made the wealth of the village in the 19th century.
The hills under the village were full of planted olive trees and starting in 1829, twenty olive pressers were providing up to 2000 liters of olive oil for Ajaccio- those were the good years.

Different neighborhoods started to combine in a single village:
Pila with its tower and houses dating from the 1789
Canale which also expanded with the Pianedda neighborhood (composed of the former police station and several houses from the 16th and 17th centuries)
Chaleil, the prefect who was stationed in Corsica from 1906 to 1909, gave his name to the fountain built in 1907. This fountain puts an end to the high road where the town hall and school were built, along side other houses. Originally, the neighborhoods were connected by stretti (crossroads) that are still in use today.
